Memories of Midget
I will start with the playing field Committee.
Once a year we held a garden fete,The playing field hut had to be scrubbed out this was the job of the ladies,Midget,Beryl,Edna, and Joan. Joan's job was always to clean the toilet out. The week began with all the cooking, making cakes and icing them. Then on the Saturday the fete would start in the afternoon,Midge selling raffle tickets,Edna and Joan serving teas,Beryl and Mick Lambert ran the lucky wheel.I will always remember going with Midge up to High House Farm for a raffle prize and was told we could have a chicken,But we never got the chicken we had to catch it first. When the fete was over it was time for the dance in the Frost Hall and a Whist Drive in the Rectory Room.
Then came the time to join the Frost Hall with the same Committee, if their was a wedding booked the same ladies would scrub the Hall out,so the bride did not mess her dress up.
Their was many memories of the Record Hop one night a week for one shilling. We raised a lot of money from this which bought all the Crockery,& Curtains.
We had very exciting meetings with Alfred Doughty always arguing we had spent to much money. We carried on from there to Bingo on Saturday nights, Same Commitee with Midge and Leslie running it.With out this Bingo the Frost Hall and Playing Field would have been in a poor way. This all helped The New Village Hall, children's parties were held at Christmas every child in the village came.
Father Christmas would arrive with sack full of presents one for each child. The older children would have a Disco so they were not left out. This was all the hard work of myself, but without the help of some ladies cooking and helping on the day i do not know what we would have done.
Now we go onto the Foulsham Ladies Cricket Team, which we had many laughs. I will always remember going to a meeting at Fakenham,we were invited by The Fakenham Ladies Team,so we thought we would go,so we hired a car from Ringwood's Garage,Mick Lambert drove us,going along Midge said oh you have got a dish of gravy under the seat,my reply to this all we want now is a loaf of bread. This tale has been told by Midge many times.
It was only a few weeks ago we were laughing about this.Their was another occasion we went again to a meeting, the meeting finished early,so we went to look for Mr Lambert,Joan striding of leaving myself and Midget behind. Midget said i cannot keep up,Joan said was wrong with you Midgets reply was i am pregnant,we could not believe it.That is where Ronald came into the Heyhoe family.Midget will be remembered for all of these tales and many more. This last year Midget was very poorly in Health but always had time to tell these tales, and i have had a good laugh.
I have known Midget since she lived up the Lizards,I used to take Marjorie to school while Midget went to work doing a days thrashing for the Myhill family.Midget you have left us all behind to carry on these tales.
May you rest in Peace now.
Beryl.
